With 35 years at Tetra Tech Coffey, Harry Poulos has been a cornerstone of our team, consulting on high-profile projects worldwide and specialising in the foundations of tall buildings.
Tetra Tech Coffey colleagues gathered in Sydney to honour a man whose impact on the field of engineering is profound.
Harry began his career in academia progressing from the position of Lecturer to Professor, to Emeritus Professor, and still to this day giving the occasional lectures to postgraduate students. Harry transitioned from a career in academia to Tetra Tech Coffey in 1989, where he continues to shares his expertise globally.
Harry’s legacy is his groundbreaking research in foundation engineering, especially pile foundation analysis and design, has supported superstructures like the Burj Khalifa. His dedication continues as he mentors Geotechs and Engineers, present at conferences, and delivers technical papers.
Over his career, Harry has received many awards and honours, including:
- Being the first Australian to be awarded the Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2010.
- In 2014, he was elected by his peers as a Foreign Associate to The National Academy of Engineering (USA), one of the highest honours given to an engineer globally.
- In 2017, the American Society of Civil Engineers recognized Harry with their Lifetime Achievement Award in Design.
- In 2020 Harry was awarded the Peter Nicol Career Achievement Memorial Medal – the highest honor conferred by Engineers Australia
- In 2022 the Australian Geomechanics Society – Sydney Chapter recognised Harry as an AGS Life Member
