More Than a Mo: Rob Bancroft’s Movember Journey

Rob Bancroft

This Movember, Rob Bancroft isn’t just growing a moustache – he’s growing awareness and support for mental health and firefighting.

During the week Rob is a Lead Mechanical Piping Drafter with Tetra Tech in Perth, Western Australia. But the weekends and spare time sees him in his fourth season of service as a proud member of the Darlington Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade, while advocating for conversations about men’s health and raising funds for his brigade’s much-needed support unit refurbishment.

For Rob, Movember is deeply personal.

“I’ve known three people who sadly took their own lives due to mental health issues and another who has attempted to. Suicide prevention is my number one motivation this Movember. The more we do to help people feel comfortable speaking up, the more impact we can create.”

Rob speaks candidly about his own challenges, including the emotional toll of IVF over a decade, work stress, and navigating diagnoses of depression and ADHD.

“Thankfully, my wife created a space where I could open up, even though it took time. Everyone faces challenges differently, and that’s okay.”

Rob’s story is a reminder that mental health struggles don’t need to be faced alone—and even small actions, like checking in on a friend, can save lives.

Supporting the Bush Fire Brigade

Rob’s Movember campaign goes beyond mental health to support his brigade. The Darlington Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade’s support unit, used for crew transport, towing water tanks, and acting as a control vehicle, is critical for their operations but requires refurbishment.

“Unlike firefighting appliances, the support unit is owned by the brigade, so any upgrades rely heavily on fundraising,” Rob explains.

This year, Stewart Phillis General Manager Tetra Tech Proteus has pledged to match up to $2,000 raised by the Tetra Tech Movember team to help fund this refurbishment. With fire season fast approaching, this support is crucial for the brigade’s ability to respond effectively.
