Sapphire to Woolgoolga Pacific Highway upgrade

Delivering geotechnical investigations, detailed design, and construction oversight for the Sapphire to Woolgoolga Pacific Highway upgrade project

Battling with a sensitive, natural environment and difficult soft soils of the NSW north coast, Tetra Tech Coffey experts rose to the challenge to deliver the technical expertise needed to build this critical roads infrastructure project.

The $850m project included 25km of dual lane divided carriageways and 15km of local roads, 28 bridges – including new bridges and replacements and five new interchanges.

We delivered geotechnical investigations, detailed design and construction services during contamination sites investigations and waste classifications of surplus materials and specialised testing services.

With over two million cubic metres of earthworks, material management was a major challenge. To reduce materials processing costs, we developed alternative material specifications with similar performance profiles. We developed alternative earthwork specifications that provided a more cost-effective methodology, without compromising performance.

The retention of soils on site represents the sustainable use of the resource, allowing rehabilitation of project borrow pits. This approach resulted in significant savings in cost and time compared to alternative options. Our solutions delivered lower-cost, time-saving alternatives, while achieving the required performance.
